The stunning Charles Bridge in Prague, Czech Republic.

Charles Bridge is the most famous of Prague's bridges, and with good reason. It is a stunningly beautiful bridge, full of atmosphere, sometimes quite haunting. It was built over 500 years ago at the beginning of the fifteenth century, and is named after King Charles 1V. It has been severely damages across the years, often due to flooding of the River Vltava that flows beneath it's arches.

Now it is closed to traffic and is usually full of tourists enjoying the 30 magnificent statues that are places along either side of the bridge. You will often see people having their photograph taken next to their favourite statue. At night it is beautifully lit and looks wonderful from a distance. The bridge is also home to street musicians, artists and craft stalls, all adding to it's delightful atmosphere.

One of the best times to go however, is very early in the morning when it is virtually empty and the sun is just rising casting long shadows of the statues across the bridge. At this time Charles Bridge is at it's best and most haunting, you can imagine yourself transported back to another time, hundreds of years ago.
